On my Macbook, iMessage can only send text messages. I have hand off enabled and regularly send SMS messages through hand off from my Mac. This is what solved my problem which came from another thread I posted. Using iMessage, both my iPhone and iPad can send any type of messages fine. But I am looking for this ability when sending from my Mac. When the Messages app opens, you just need to confirm you want to use iMessage. Yep I have that enabled on my iPhone and it works fine, if the contact does not have iMessage or iMessage is disabled it reverts to SMS or gives me the option to send as SMS. Make sure you're logged in to the correct Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, and Macs that you want to be synced up.
